Aged patiently in large Slavonian oak botti instead of small modern barriques, the 2020 Mastrojanni Brunello di Montalcino showcases the precise, mineral-driven side of southeastern Montalcino’s Sangiovese. Now stewarded by the Illy family but founded in 1975 to develop the overlooked Castelnuovo dell’Abate area, the estate sits near the Orcia River and Sant’Antimo Abbey, where ancient cobblestone debris, clay, tuff, and sandstone combine with south-southeast exposure to create a uniquely cool microclimate.

This viticultural advantage translates directly into the glass. The 2020 vintage delivers a deep brick-red appearance with a savory, layered bouquet of baked cherry, cured leather, damp earth truffle, crushed floral notes, and a clear thread of black licorice. On the palate, the wine is exceptionally silky and detailed. Ultra-fine, powdered tannins provide structure without heaviness, while a clean, persistent finish reveals a distinct saline quality that highlights the vineyard’s complex subsoils.

Serving & Pairing Open this Brunello two hours before dinner to allow the complex aromatic layers to unfold. Its balanced acidity and refined tannic grip make it an ideal match for rich, slow-cooked dishes and aged dairy:

  • Slow-braised beef short ribs
  • Roasted wild boar or game birds
  • Well-aged pecorino or firm Italian cheeses

Store upright away from direct light. Pour generously to aerate, allowing the earthy fruit and mineral backbone to fully interact with braised or roasted proteins.

94+ Points
"You'll recognize this wine by its classy packaging that features a red wax seal on the front label. The Mastrojanni 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is a little shy initially. A few more years, even months, of bottle age should get it to shine. The bouquet is detailed and precise with small forest fruits, dried rose, earth and light spice. It pieces together well over a bright, medium-weight mouthfeel. Production is 74,000 bottles."
