The 2022 Montevertine Le Pergole Torte delivers the structured intensity of historic Chianti Sangiovese alongside the refined complexity that established this Radda estate as a pioneer of the Super Tuscan movement. Sourced exclusively from the property’s oldest vines planted in 1968, the blend leans heavily on Sangiovese with trace amounts of Colorino and Canaiolo. Fruit is manually sorted in the vineyard, fermented in cement Tanks to preserve primary freshness, then matured for twelve months in large Slavonian oak casks, followed by another year in French barriques before a six-month bottle rest. This measured aging schedule keeps the wine’s natural acidity intact while coaxing out the savory layers older roots provide. Tasting Notes: The wine opens to a deep luminous ruby hue. The aromatic profile traces crushed sour cherry, bright raspberry, and violet blossom, quickly grounding into dark cocoa, espresso roast, and graphite minerality. On the palate, the entry is rich yet tightly wound, with youthful but already cohesive tannins framing dried herbs, cedar, and a persistent wet-stone finish. Suggested Pairings: Align the wine’s firm acid-tannin structure with robust, sauce-driven courses. Slow-braised beef short ribs, rosemary-roasted duck breast, and grilled wild boar ragù all benefit from its backbone. For a simpler service, pour alongside aged Pecorino Tosano or a two-year-old Parmigiano Reggiano to highlight the wine’s earthy mineral threads.

"Here is another masterpiece from vintner Martino Manetti (and winemaker Paolo Salvi, following in the footsteps of long-time key figures Giulio Gambelli and Estate Manager Bruno Bini). The Montevertine 2022 Le Pergole Torte is 100% Sangiovese made in a similar winemaking style as the others, although both botte and barrique are used here. It opens to a dark garnet appearance that is velvety and rich yet shiny on the inside with a ruby brightness that is specific to this Tuscan grape. This is an amazing wine, so precise and balanced. I love the boldness of the vintage, and I am delighted by how elegantly it unfolds over the palate. The wine is contoured and pretty in terms of texture, and yet there are mineral notes that add freshness and vertical lift. This portfolio offers good scale with three wines, an entry-level, middle-level and top-end wine, each offering a distinct identity. Production is 30,000 bottles. This is one of my favorite wines from 2022, a vintage with highs and lows. This is definitely a high."
