2022 Querciabella - Mongrana (750ml)
The 2022 Querciabella Mongrana channels the mineral-driven profile of Italy’s coastal Maremma through a deliberate blend of Sangiovese, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon cultivated on acidic, iron-rich soils of silt, alluvial sand, and scattered gravel. Managed under biodynamic viticulture, the estate hand-harvests the cluster by cluster before fermenting in temperature-controlled stainless steel and conditioning the must for at least ten months in large cement amphorae. Aging exclusively in inert vessels strips away woody influence, preserving high-voltage fruit clarity and a firm structural skeleton.
Aromatic development opens with ripe morello cherry, blackberry, and wild blueberry, gradually deepening into kirsch, crushed pine, and a whisper of black licorice as the wine breathes. The middle palate delivers a juicy, medium-weight profile guided by polished tannins and crisp malic acidity. A long, savory finale leaves a lingering imprint of flinty minerality and bright red fruit.
Mongrana’s versatile architecture holds up well alongside robust regional cuisines. It balances the umami punch of pasta all’amatriciana, stands up to charred herb-marinated beef or lamb, and slices cleanly through sharp, aged pecorino. Consume between 2023 and 2028 for peak fruit expression, or cellaring longer to encourage earthy tertiary layers to surface.
