Spottswoode is a historic, family-owned estate on the western edge of St. Helena, first planted in 1882 by George Schonewald and later named for the Spotts family, who owned the property for decades. Mary Weber Novak and her husband, Dr. Jack Novak, purchased the estate in 1972, and after his unexpected death, Mary carried their vision forward, releasing Spottswoode's debut Cabernet Sauvignon in 1982. The estate was an early adopter of organic farming in Napa Valley, has held CCOF certification since 1992, added Demeter Biodynamic certification in 2020, and became Napa Valley's first Certified B Corp winery.

The 2024 Sauvignon Blanc draws fifty-seven percent of its fruit from Sonoma County and forty-three percent from Napa, including sites like Hyde Vineyard in Carneros and Heitz Brothers and Tofanelli in Calistoga, alongside Spottswoode's own estate vineyard. A small addition of Sémillon rounds out the blend. Winemaker Aron Weinkauf ferments and ages the wine across a mix of vessels, including French oak, stainless steel, clay amphora, and concrete, each contributing its own layer of texture and minerality.

The wine opens with white peach, lime zest, jasmine, and crushed herbs, moving into a palate of grapefruit, kiwi, and green melon carried by vibrant, precise acidity. The finish stays long and refined without leaning too heavily on oak. It pairs beautifully with raw oysters, grilled halibut, or a simple goat cheese salad.

93 Points
"Spottswoode's 2024 Sauvignon Blanc draws fruit from both Sonoma (57%) and Napa (43%), incorporating 6% Sémillon as well. Fermented and matured in a mix of new and used French oak, stainless steel and "other" vessels (amphora, ceramic, concrete), it's a lively wine, with white grapefruit easily combining and underpinning riper notes of fig and guava. Medium- to full-bodied, it's silky, elegant and long on the finish."
