Glenglassaugh distillery was founded in 1875 on Scotland's rugged Aberdeenshire coast in the small port town of Portsoy, a fitting home given the area's long maritime trading history. Production fell silent for over two decades before the distillery was purchased and fully restored, reopening in November 2008 under new ownership and later joining sister distilleries GlenDronach and BenRiach within the Brown-Forman portfolio, with Rachel Barrie now serving as master blender.

Introduced as the distillery's new flagship expression, this 12 Year Old is matured across a combination of bourbon, sherry, and red wine casks, a mix chosen to layer sweet fruit and toasted oak character over the whisky's inherent coastal profile. The distillery's exposed seaside location and mineral-rich spring water contribute a distinct briny freshness that carries through the finished spirit, bottled at 46% ABV.

The nose opens with ripe apricot, fig, and toasted vanilla, joined by candied nuts and a trace of sea air. On the palate, stone fruit and toffee lead into softly salted chocolate and creamy hazelnut, with a lingering nuttiness reminiscent of caramelized pistachio. The finish is smooth and moderately long, closing on honey and a whisper of salt.
