Amrut Fusion Whiskey 750ml

Amrut Distilleries is a family-owned company founded in Bangalore in 1948, originally producing Indian Made Foreign Liquor rather than anything resembling single malt. In the 1980s the Jagdale family began sourcing malted barley from farmers in Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan instead of relying on molasses, and built a dedicated distillery on Mysore Road in 1987. By the mid-1990s, surplus casks of malt whisky had been left to age longer than planned, and the results convinced the company it had something worth bottling on its own. Amrut Fusion, released in 2009, built on that discovery by pairing Indian barley with a Scottish counterpart for the first time.

Fusion combines 75 percent unpeated Indian barley with 25 percent peated Scottish barley. The two spirits are distilled and matured separately for around four years in American oak casks at the Bangalore distillery, roughly 3,000 feet above sea level, where the tropical climate speeds maturation considerably compared to Scotland. The two malts are then married together in ex-bourbon casks for a further three months before bottling at 50 percent ABV, without an age statement.

The nose offers thickly oaked barley sugar wrapped in soft smoke. The palate turns bold and full-bodied, with toffee, vanilla, and gentle peat building into a core of dark chocolate and coffee. The finish is long, moving from dark fruit into earthy leather with a final trace of molasses sweetness.
