Amrut Intermediate Sherry Cask Whiskey 750ml

Amrut Distilleries has operated out of Bangalore since 1948, spending decades as a producer of blended whisky before turning its attention to single malt in the early 2000s. That shift, and the distillery's willingness to experiment with unconventional cask programs, has earned Amrut international recognition, including a spot among the world's top-rated whiskies from critic Jim Murray. The Intermediate Sherry expression, launched at the Paris Whisky Live show in 2010, is one of the clearest examples of that experimental streak.

Production starts with Amrut's cask strength single malt, matured in virgin and ex-bourbon casks in India. The whisky is then shipped to Jerez, where it is filled into ex-Oloroso sherry butts sourced locally, a step designed to avoid the sulfur taint that can come from fumigating empty casks before shipping. After roughly a year maturing in Spain, the whisky returns to Bangalore for several more months resting in used bourbon barrels, completing a bourbon-sherry-bourbon cycle across two continents. It is bottled at cask strength, around 57.1 percent ABV.

The nose carries sherry-driven spice, raw oak, and overripe plum and fig, with a dusty, old-book quality underneath. The palate is thick and malty, layering raisins, dark chocolate, and caramel with cinnamon and orange peel. The finish is long, dry, and oaky, closing on cocoa.
