Amrut Peated Single Malt Whiskey 750ml

Amrut Distilleries was founded in Bengaluru in 1948, the same year India gained independence, and takes its name from Hindu mythology's nectar of the gods, said to have emerged when deities and demons churned the cosmic ocean together. For decades the company focused on blended whisky before turning to single malt production in the early 2000s. In a deliberate marketing move, Amrut chose to launch its first single malt in Scotland in 2004 rather than at home, reasoning that success in the birthplace of Scotch would prove its quality beyond doubt, a gamble that helped establish India as a serious single malt producing country.

Amrut Peated is distilled from Indian barley, but the peated component is smoked in Scotland to roughly 20 to 25 parts per million before being shipped to Bengaluru. Maturation takes place at an altitude of around 3,000 feet, where Bangalore's tropical climate accelerates the whisky's development considerably compared to Scotland's cooler conditions. The whisky is bottled without chill filtration and in its natural color, typically at 46 percent ABV.

The nose carries a dry, leathery peat with a hint of citrus underneath. On the palate, molasses sweetness arrives first, then builds into stronger peat and spice. The finish stays clean and layered, with butterscotch and vanilla wrapping around lingering smoke.
