Balvenie 14 yr Curious Casks (Bourbon) Single Malt 750ml

The Balvenie distillery sits in Speyside and remains one of the few in Scotland to still malt a portion of its own barley on traditional floor maltings. Its Collection of Curious Casks series, part of the broader Balvenie Stories line, is built around the discoveries of malt master Kelsey McKechnie and samples coordinator George Paterson, who seek out barrels in the distillery's warehouses that developed unexpected or unusual characteristics during maturation rather than following a fixed recipe.

This particular batch was originally intended for a Single Barrel 12 Year Old release, but tasting revealed a subtle smoky quality in spirit that had never touched peated malt. The cause traced back to residue left in the stills after Balvenie's annual "peat week," when the distillery runs its smoky whisky, which lightly carried over into the following unpeated batch. Rather than discard the anomaly, the whisky was left to mature further in first-fill American oak ex-bourbon barrels for a minimum of fourteen years, then bottled at 47% ABV.

The nose brings toffee, citrus, and vanilla with a faint wisp of woodsmoke underneath. On the palate, candied orange peel and warm baking spice meet toasted malt and honey, with the smoke lingering quietly rather than dominating. The finish is long, sweet, and gently spiced.
