BenRiach The Original 10 yr Three Cask Matured Single Malt Whiskey 750ml
BenRiach Distillery was established in 1898 by John Duff in Speyside, Scotland, close to the Longmorn distillery he also founded. Production halted only two years later amid the collapse of a major whisky purchaser, and the site sat largely dormant, producing only malt, until Glenlivet Distillers reopened it in 1965. Today owned by Brown-Forman and led by master blender Dr. Rachel Barrie, BenRiach has built its modern reputation on experimentation across peated and unpeated styles alike.
The Original Ten, introduced as part of a core range relaunch in 2020, is matured for a minimum of ten years across three cask types: ex-bourbon barrels, ex-sherry casks, and new virgin oak. The bourbon wood contributes vanilla and caramel sweetness, the sherry casks add dried fruit and nutty depth, and the virgin oak layers in spice and toasted character. It is bottled at its natural cask-imparted color at 43% ABV.
The nose opens with orchard fruit like apple and pear alongside honeyed malt and gentle vanilla, with a faint wisp of toasted oak and a whisper of smoke. The palate is smooth and full, carrying dried fruit, malted barley, and warm baking spice through to a medium, softly warming finish.
