BenRiach Distillery sits in the heart of Speyside, in Morayshire, Scotland, built by John Duff in 1898 and drawing its water from the underground Burnside Springs. The distillery's early run was short-lived, closing after just two years amid the collapse of a major whisky purchaser, and it did not return to producing malt whiskey until decades later. Today part of Brown-Forman's portfolio, BenRiach has built a reputation on releasing both peated and unpeated single malts, often finished in unusual cask types sourced from around the world.

This expression was distilled in May 1994 from BenRiach's peated spirit and matured for its full twenty-eight years in a single Tokaji hogshead, cask #4006, a cask type more commonly used for the sweet Hungarian dessert wine of the same name. That long single-cask maturation lends the smoky Speyside spirit an unusual layer of dried fruit sweetness rarely paired with peat. The whiskey was bottled in 2023 at cask strength, 56.3% ABV, from a limited run.

Casks of this type typically carry honeyed fig, baked pineapple, and apricot marmalade, with ginger and spice building against a backdrop of gentle smoke. The palate leans into that same sweet, spiced fruit character, with the finish carrying smoke and warmth through to a long close.
