Glenallachie 10 yr 2015 Mizunara Hogshead Cask No 1951 Single Malt Whiskey 700ml

GlenAllachie sits at the foot of Ben Rinnes in Speyside, built in 1967 but largely overlooked for decades while producing whisky mainly for blends. That changed in 2017, when Billy Walker, along with Trisha Savage and Graham Stevenson, bought the distillery and turned it into one of Scotland's most independently minded producers, built around an unusually adventurous cask program. Walker has become known for sourcing rare wood types most distilleries avoid, and Mizunara oak sits near the top of that list.

This single cask was distilled in 2015 and matured for a decade in cask number 1951, a hogshead crafted from Japanese Mizunara oak, cut from the slow-growing Quercus mongolica tree. The wood's tight, twisting grain makes it difficult to cooper and prone to leaking, and the trees themselves take roughly two centuries to mature, making genuine Mizunara casks both rare and expensive to source. The whisky was bottled at cask strength, 60.4% ABV, without chill filtration or added color.

Expect coconut, sandalwood, and delicate incense on the nose, layered with tropical fruit and vanilla. The palate carries warm spice, honey, and soft oak, finishing long and gently sweet.
