Laphroaig Quarter Cask Whiskey 750ml

Laphroaig was founded in 1815 by brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston on Islay's south coast, and the Johnston family ran the distillery for generations afterward. Donald Johnston's own end became part of distillery lore: he is said to have died after falling into a vat of partially made whisky. That long history sits behind a house style built on some of the heaviest peat and most medicinal character found anywhere in Scotch whisky.

Released in 2004, Quarter Cask takes its name from the small oak casks used in its final stage of maturation, a nod to the nineteenth-century practice of moving whisky on packhorses in smaller barrels that were easier to transport and conceal. After around five to six years resting in standard ex-bourbon barrels, the whisky is transferred into these smaller casks for several additional months. Their reduced size gives the spirit roughly a third more contact with the wood, drawing out flavor more quickly than conventional maturation would allow. It carries no age statement, is barrier filtered rather than chill filtered, and is bottled at 48 percent ABV.

The nose combines powerful smoke and peat with vanilla, coconut, and banana sweetness. The palate turns rich and medicinal, with caramelized sugar and toffee balancing chili heat and spice. The finish runs long, sweet, and smoky, drying out slowly with lingering peat.
