Murray McDavid bills its craft as the Art of Maturation, bottling everything from vintage single malts and single grains to vatted malts across several ranges. Its Mystery Malt series is the playful one: each whisky is labeled only by region, since bottling agreements keep the distillery's name off the label, leaving drinkers to deduce the source. The company even hosts tastings aboard its own 60-foot wooden boat on Glasgow's River Clyde.

The clues point to a family-run Speyside distillery founded in 1836 in the shadow of Ben Rinnes, a house long devoted to sherry maturation. Distilled in 2009, this single cask spent 16 years in a 500-liter European oak Oloroso butt before being bottled at cask strength, 57.2%, in 2025, yielding just 682 bottles.

Orange oil, cinnamon rolls, and creamy malt open the nose. The palate brings mixed currants and walnuts wrapped in sweet oak spice, while the finish lingers on barley sugar and candied nuts. A few drops of water tame the strength and help open it up. Serve it with aged Gouda and Medjool dates or a slice of rich fruitcake.
