2018 Avondale - Phoenix Red Blend Paarl (750ml)

A wine with a story. Avondale sits at the foot of the Klein Drakenstein mountains in Paarl, and since the Grieve family took over in the late 1990s, Johnathan Grieve has turned it into one of South Africa’s leading organic estates. His BioLOGIC farming blends organic principles, biodynamic preparations and modern soil science, with a flock of Pekin ducks patrolling the vines for pests. When wildfire swept through part of the farm in January 2026, Avondale released Phoenix, named for the protea, a native flower whose seeds only sprout after fire. Avondale is dedicating proceeds to replanting vineyards and restoring the estate’s biodiversity.

A Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec from certified organic vines, the 2018 offers blackcurrant, plum and dark berries with dark chocolate, coffee and a hint of licorice. Full and layered, with refined, well-integrated tannins and a long, silky finish. Drinking beautifully now with years ahead. Pair with grilled lamb, steak or braised short ribs.
