The pinnacle of traditional Rioja. López de Heredia has worked from Haro’s Barrio de la Estación since 1877, and its Gran Reserva comes only from the family’s legendary Viña Tondonia vineyard, on a bend of the Ebro River in Rioja Alta. It’s made only in top vintages, and 2005 is one of the great modern years in Rioja. The blend is Tempranillo with Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano, aged around ten years in old American oak barrels from the bodega’s own cooperage, then rested for years more in bottle before release.

Expect the classic Tondonia profile at its most complex: dried cherry and black fruit, licorice, cedar and tobacco leaf, with forest floor, truffle, sweet spice and an iron, savory core. Silky and ethereal on the palate, with lifted acidity and a long, layered finish. Drinking beautifully now, and it will last for decades. Decant gently for sediment, and pair with roast lamb, suckling pig, wild mushrooms or aged Manchego

97+ Points
"The 2005 Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva has a more Mediterranean profile with aromas of fennel and thyme, with a core of red fruit, a velvety and round palate and fine, polished tannins. In comparison with the Bosconia Gran Reserva, this is more austere and serious. It was produced with 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacho and the rest Graciano and Mazuelo, fermented in the old oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in those old vats and well-seasoned American oak barrels for 14 years. It has a contained 12.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.4 and 6.6 grams of acidity. 23,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2019"
