A cult classic from one of Rioja’s most traditional houses. Rafael López de Heredia founded the bodega in Haro’s Barrio de la Estación in 1877, and the family still makes wine much as they did then. Gravonia is 100% Viura from the estate’s Zaconia vineyard, very old vines (93 years old, per Wine Advocate) on gravel over limestone, fermented in large oak vats and aged about six years in well-seasoned American oak before release. It was bottled in September 2024.

The 2018 is pale gold and quietly complex, with dried lemon, citrus oil, pear and chamomile, layered with roasted almond, beeswax, wet stone and that signature sea-breeze, mushroomy edge of long barrel aging. Medium-bodied and savory, with linear acidity and a long, saline finish. Serve slightly cool, not cold, and pair with grilled fish, jamón ibérico, mushroom dishes or aged Manchego.

95 Points
"The white 2018 Viña Gravonia Blanco was harvested from the 24th of September, the first grapes the winery picked that challenging year. The vines are now 93 years old, on gravel soils with a limestone base. The wine matured in well-seasoned American oak barrels and vats for six years. It has a pale yellow color and a young nose but with the "Tondonia" cave aromas of mushroom, wax, diesel and balsam, with a core of dry flowers and pollen. The palate is vibrant and pungent, with purity, and there's a long, saline finish. It comes in at 12.5% alcohol, with a pH of 3.0 and seven grams of acidity. 50,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2024."
