Bodegas Borsao traces to 1958, when growers in the town of Borja formed a cooperative in Zaragoza province, Aragón. In 2001, that cooperative joined forces with two neighboring co-ops, Pozuelo and Tabuenca, to form Bodegas Borsao as it exists today, now representing roughly a third of the vineyard land in Campo de Borja. Hundreds of grower-shareholders farm plots in the foothills of the Moncayo mountain, an area so closely tied to the grape that Campo de Borja is nicknamed the Empire of Garnacha. Winemaking is overseen by José Luis Chueca Sancho.
Viña Borgia is a 100% Garnacha bottling sourced from vineyards across Campo de Borja, where old, dry-farmed bush vines sit at elevations up to 800 meters and endure hot days followed by cool nights, conditions that help the grapes hold on to good acidity. The wine is vinified simply to preserve the grape's fresh, expressive character rather than aiming for weight or oak-driven complexity. It represents an easy, everyday entry point into the region's broader range, which also includes barrel-aged, single-vineyard bottlings from old bush vines.
The 2020 shows a medium ruby color with aromas of red plum, cherry, violet, and a light herbal edge, backed by soft spice and a touch of earthy, clay-like character. The palate is light to medium in body, dry and fresh, with gentle tannins and a bright, cherry-driven finish. It's an easy match for burgers, grilled vegetables, or a simple plate of cured cheese.
