2020 Roses de Jeanne - Champagne Blanc de Noirs Les Ursules (750ml)
The name Roses de Jeanne honors Cédric Bouchard's maternal grandmother, and refers as well to the roses that once grew through the original Les Ursules parcel, the site where his entire project began. Bouchard follows an uncompromising method across the range: no blending between plots, no chaptalization, no fining or filtering, and no dosage, letting each single-vineyard, single-vintage wine stand entirely on its own. His approach, built on very low yields and organic farming, has made him one of the most closely watched names among grower Champagne collectors.
Les Ursules comes from vines planted in 1990 and 1991 by Bouchard's father and uncle, using massale selection taken directly from the parcel itself. The shallow clay topsoil is heavily littered with limestone scree, lending density and structure to the finished wine. Bouchard tastes the grapes and chews the stems through the season to judge the ideal picking date before the fruit is pressed and vinified with no added sugar at any stage.
The 2020 shows floral and spice aromas up front, followed by rose petal, cinnamon, dried cherry, and orange peel, all wrapped in a polished, elegant frame. Pour it with herb-roasted lamb or a wedge of ripe Camembert.
