Maraska Slivovitz Kosher Brandy 750ml
Maraska has been distilling in Zadar, on Croatia's Adriatic coast, since 1768, building a reputation as one of Europe's oldest and most respected houses for traditional Dalmatian spirits and liqueurs. While the company is perhaps best known internationally for its Maraschino cherry liqueur, Slivovitz, the classic plum brandy of the former Yugoslavia, has long been one of its signature offerings, produced here under strict kosher guidelines that certify it kosher for Passover.
The brandy is made from ripe blue plums grown in the Adriatic Hinterland, the second largest plum-growing region in the world, harvested from trees that are at least twenty years old. The fruit is fermented for three months in large tanks before undergoing a traditional double distillation, a method that has been used in the region since the Middle Ages. The resulting spirit is then matured for a minimum of two years in specially treated oak casks to develop its color and complexity.
Off-clear in the glass, the brandy carries aromas of ripe blackberries and blueberries with a subtle touch of anise underneath. Smooth and warming on the palate, it is traditionally sipped neat at room temperature, though it also suits serving alongside fruit strudel or a rich dark chocolate dessert.
