Romana Black Sambuca Liqueur 750ml
Romana Black Sambuca comes from the Pallini family, who have produced spirits in Rome since 1875 and secured exclusive rights to the "Sambuca Romana" name in 1964, distinguishing their bottling from the many generic sambucas that later followed. Their clear Romana Sambuca became the best selling sambuca in the United States, and in 1999 the family introduced the Black expression as a way to explore what elderberries could bring to the anise tradition they had already spent more than a century refining.
Production begins with the distillation of green and star anise, forming the anise-forward backbone shared with the clear original. Elderberry extract from Sambucus Nigra berries is then added and macerated into the spirit, giving the liqueur its natural, inky black color without the use of artificial dyes. The blend is sweetened according to the family's closely held formula and bottled at around thirty eight to forty percent alcohol by volume. Notably, despite its dark appearance, the liqueur turns a vivid electric blue when mixed with water.
The nose leads with rich star anise and licorice, layered with dark berry depth from the elderberry. The palate is smooth and velvety, balancing anise sweetness against a more concentrated, slightly tart berry character, finishing long and warm.
