Smirnoff traces its origins to 1864, when Pyotr Arsenievich Smirnov founded a vodka distillery in Moscow and pioneered the charcoal filtration method that still defines the brand today. After the Russian Revolution forced the Smirnov family to flee, Pyotr's son Vladimir reestablished the company in Europe, eventually introducing the vodka to the United States under the name Smirnoff. Recipe No. 21, created during this period of exile, remains the brand's flagship formula. Now owned by Diageo, Smirnoff is sold in more than 130 countries and holds the distinction of being one of the world's most awarded vodkas.

Smirnoff No. 21 is distilled from a blend of grains, primarily non-GMO corn, through a three-step distillation process designed to maximize purity. The defining step follows distillation, when the spirit undergoes a slow, gravity-fed filtration through ten stages across seven columns of hardwood charcoal, a process that can take up to eight hours. Rather than adding flavor, the charcoal removes trace impurities that might otherwise create harshness, resulting in a notably clean and smooth finished spirit bottled at 40% ABV.

On the nose, Smirnoff No. 21 is nearly neutral, with a mild sweetness carried through to the palate alongside light almond and coconut notes and a faint trace of charcoal. The finish brings a brief burst of pepper and warm spice before settling into a clean, dry close that reflects the meticulous filtration process behind it.

"Smirnoff No. 21 Vodka is the World's No. 1 Vodka. Our award-winning vodka has robust flavor with a dry finish for ultimate smoothness and clarity. Triple distilled and 10 times filtered, our vodka is perfect on the rocks or in your favorite cocktail. Smirnoff No. 21 is Kosher Certified and gluten free."
