2017 Jeff Cohn - Syrah Sonoma Domaine des Chirats (750ml)
2017 Jeff Cohn – Syrah Sonoma, Domaine des Chirats (750ml) is the collaborative expression of Rockpile Syrah from Sonoma County, born from the partnership between winemaker Jeff Cohn and Yves Cuilleron. Domaine des Chirats—whose old French name translates roughly to “home of the pile of rocks”—is now in its fourth-plus vintage, reflecting a shared vision for a Rhône-inspired Syrah from California.
The fruit for this bottling comes from the Rockpile AVA, a rugged, high‑elevation area noted for thin, rocky soils and intense sun exposure. The wine is crafted with an eye toward the structured, savory style of the Northern Rhône, incorporating fermentation and aging techniques drawn from that region to produce a wine built for patience.
Wine profile
- Tasting notes: tar and scorched earth over cassis, blackberry pie, and violets, with supporting notes of olive, thyme, ground pepper, and a menthol lift on the finish.
- Texture and character: full-bodied and grainy in texture, with fruit carefully balanced by savory, gamey undertones that evoke the Rhône more than classic New World Syrah.
Cellaring and experience
Designed to evolve, this wine delivers a structured, ageworthy frame that will soften and open over more than a decade in the bottle.
