Sine Qua Non was founded in 1994 by Manfred and Elaine Krankl, an artistic duo whose fiercely independent approach helped define California's Rhone Ranger movement. The winery treats every vintage as a singular work, giving each release its own name, bottle shape, and hand drawn label rather than repeating a fixed lineup year after year. In 2001 the Krankls purchased Eleven Confessions, their first estate owned vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills, naming it for the eleven different grape scions planted there, each one destined to reveal its own truth in the glass over time.

Eleven Confessions sits in the eastern Sta. Rita Hills, a pocket Manfred Krankl has described as a warm site within an otherwise cool region, allowing the fruit to hang long into a harvest that often stretches into November. Heavy clay soils and high density plantings hold yields to roughly a ton and a half per acre, producing fruit that is naturally structured and intense. Because the Syrah develops slowly, it spends an extended period in barrel, longer than most Sine Qua Non bottlings, a process that builds unusual purity and precision into the finished wine while preserving the vibrant acidity the site is known for.

The 2022 Eleven Confessions Syrah shows layers of crème de cassis, flowery incense, and dark cocoa across an ultra fine, velvety texture. Bright, electric acidity threads through the wine's considerable concentration, giving it real lift and structural focus rather than sheer weight. It pairs beautifully with grilled lamb, venison loin, or a rich duck breast.
