2023 Ouled Thaleb - Syrah Syrocco Zenata (750ml)
Domaine des Ouled Thaleb is Morocco's oldest active winery, with vines planted in 1923 near Benslimane and a first vintage released in 1927. The Syrocco project began in 2003, when celebrated Crozes-Hermitage winemaker Alain Graillot was cycling through Morocco and stopped at the estate, struck by how closely the terroir resembled his home vineyards in the Northern Rhône. That chance encounter led to a lasting collaboration with the estate's oenologists, bringing Rhône winemaking sensibility to Moroccan Syrah.
This Syrah is grown in the Atlantic-influenced hills of the Zenata region, sheltered in the lee of the Middle Atlas Mountains at roughly 500 meters elevation. Ocean breezes moderate the climate here, allowing the organically farmed, old vines, some over 40 years old, to ripen slowly and retain freshness despite the North African sun. The grapes are destemmed and fermented in concrete vats, then aged through a combination of tank and oak barrel, a process that builds structure while allowing subtle wood influence over an extended élevage.
Deep black-ruby in the glass, the wine offers a layered nose of ripe purple-black fruit, dried cherry, sandalwood, and warm spice. Medium to full bodied, it stays structured yet supple, closing on a dry, savory finish reminiscent of classic Mediterranean Syrah. Pair it with grilled lamb kebabs, spiced tagine, or aged sheep's cheese.
