Tenuta di Arceno is a Chianti Classico estate purchased in 1994 by Jess Jackson and Barbara Banke, the American wine industry couple behind Kendall-Jackson, who brought international resources to a property with a long Tuscan winemaking history. The estate spans 92 hectares of rocky hillside vineyards between 300 and 560 meters elevation, farmed under the direction of winemakers Lawrence Cronin and Pierre Seillan, who oversee both traditional Sangiovese-based wines and a set of Bordeaux-inspired blends, of which Arcanum is the flagship.

Arcanum is built around Cabernet Franc, the estate's signature variety, sourced primarily from the L'Apparita and Belvedere blocks, which benefit from strong sun exposure and sandy clay soils. The 2014 growing season was a notably difficult one across Tuscany, and the wine needed extra time in the cellar to find its balance before release. Careful canopy management and the natural resilience of Cabernet Franc, which tends to ripen well in both warm and cool years, helped the fruit reach full expression despite the challenging conditions.

The nose offers earthy, cypress, and mint notes layered with fresh blueberry, while the palate brings strawberry, exotic spice, and white chocolate over soft, inviting tannins. The finish carries the variety's classic cedar, white pepper, and tobacco character. This is a wine suited to braised veal, duck breast, or a Tuscan-style pappardelle with wild game ragu.

94 Points
"The 2014 Arcanum, made with 60% Cabernet Franc, 25% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot, represents a carefully conceived and contemplated blend to match the difficult conditions of the vintage. Unlike the 2014 Valadorna that seemed to suffer more in this challenging vintage, this top-shelf wine really has its act together. Soft and rich layers of black fruit and spice give the wine lasting depth and intensity. Perhaps the finish is a tad shorter compared to other vintages, but the difference is really quite small. Ultimately, this is a full-bodied Tuscan red with the potential for ten years (or more) of happy bottle aging."
