2019 La Poderina - Brunello di Montalcino (750ml)
Producer
La Poderina is part of the Tenute del Cerro group and sits just south of Montalcino, in a pocket of the appellation known for producing elegant, well balanced fruit. The estate dedicates around 25 acres specifically to Sangiovese Grosso, farmed at yields kept well below what the appellation's regulations allow, a choice that favors concentration and quality over volume. This careful approach has made La Poderina a reliable, well regarded name within the broader Brunello di Montalcino category.
Growing and Production
The vineyards sit at roughly 350 meters of elevation on medium loam soils with clay deposits and organic matter, conditions well suited to Sangiovese Grosso's need for both structure and freshness. After fermentation, the wine spends about 12 months in French oak barriques alongside 24 months in large Italian or Slavonian oak casks, split roughly 60 percent to 40 percent between the two vessel types. It then rests an additional 18 months in bottle before release, a lengthy process typical of traditional Brunello production.
Tasting Notes
The 2019 vintage shows a deep ruby color with garnet edges, opening to an intense nose of black cherry, wild berry, and vanilla, along with hints of blackberry, potting soil, and sweet spice. The palate is rich and full bodied, quite tannic in its youth but built to soften with time, finishing soft and persistent. It pairs naturally with roasted poultry, braised game, or a well aged pecorino.
