Terreno's Riserva bottling comes from a single vineyard the Ruhne family has long treated as the estate's most special site, an approach that reflects their broader philosophy of restraint. Rather than reaching for small barrels and heavy extraction, common paths taken by many neighboring producers chasing international styles, Terreno leans on large casks and gentle, minimal intervention winemaking. The goal throughout is to let the land itself, rather than the winemaker's hand, define the character of the finished wine.

Growing and Production

Le Bonille di Sopra sits on steep, south and southwest facing terraces that had to be hand built into the hillside, offering excellent sun exposure and natural drainage at around 400 meters. The soil is a mix of alberese, a compact limestone clay, and galestro, a softer sandstone limestone that lends elegance, the same geological combination found in parts of Montalcino. The wine is built from roughly 85 percent Sangiovese with small additions of Colorino and Cabernet Sauvignon, then aged for two years in large casks followed by another year in bottle before release, with only around 660 cases produced.

Tasting Notes

The 2019 shows somewhat woody, spicy aromas with a slightly wild edge, layered over ripe black berries, cherry, and plum. The palate carries real depth and structure, built for slow enjoyment rather than immediate drinking. It pairs well with roast pork, grilled lamb, or a hearty beef stew.

93+ Points
"The Terreno 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Le Bonille di Sopra is a lovely wine (with 8,000 bottles made) that delivers a core of dark fruit that is delicately framed by light spice and earth. The wine shows an especially juicy quality of fruit in this vintage, with good concentration and power to match. Tannins also play a bigger role in this wine, adding a solid vein of support at the back. The exact blend is 85% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Colorino, and the wine spends 24 months in large oak casks."
