Tenuta di Capraia belongs to the Tenute Calì family, who in 1981 acquired Rocca di Castagnoli, a historic Chianti Classico property in Gaiole in Chianti, and later expanded their holdings to include the Capraia estate in nearby Castellina. The estate farms over twenty-five hectares in the sought-after Conca d'Oro area, on land that has been recognized since the eighteenth century, when Grand Duke Cosimo III first delimited the historic Chianti zone. Certified organic since 2017, Capraia remains a founding member of the Consorzio Chianti Classico, and its Riserva has been recognized among Wine Spectator's Top 100 wines in a recent vintage.

This Riserva is sourced from Sangiovese grown on rocky alberese soils at elevations approaching 575 meters, among the highest sites in eastern Castellina, where cooler temperatures slow ripening and concentrate the fruit. The wine ages in a combination of large traditional Chianti barrels and tonneaux, an approach designed to build structure and complexity while keeping the oak's influence in the background rather than at the forefront.

The 2020 shows a deep ruby color and offers dark, brooding fruit layered with dried fig, leather, clove, and coffee, alongside a savory, slightly wild edge that adds real character. Full-bodied and structured, it carries firm, chewy tannins and a peppery finish with real length. Pair it with braised beef, wild boar ragù, or a hard aged cheese.

91 Points
"This broad version combines cherry, plum and iron flavors, offering savory notes of tomato leaf, eucalyptus and juniper. Beefy tannins ply the lingering finish, with earthy, savory elements. Best from 2026 through 2038. 1,500 cases made, 800 cases importe..."
