2020 Lamole - Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG Vigneto di Campolungo (750ml)
Lamole di Lamole is based in the tiny, high-altitude hamlet of Lamole above Greve in Chianti, one of the northernmost and loftiest villages in the Chianti Classico zone. The historic winery dates to the mid-fourteenth century, when it formed part of a castle built by the Gherardini family, and its original aging cellars remain in active use today. The estate farms terraced hillside vineyards shaped by centuries of hand-built dry stone walls, a landscape recognized as historic and now cultivated entirely organically.
Vigneto di Campolungo comes from a single, historic terraced vineyard rising from 420 to 580 meters, planted entirely to Sangiovese and harvested by hand between late September and mid-October. The grapes ferment in truncated cone vats with several weeks of skin contact before most of the wine ages for at least thirty months in oak barrels, with a small portion spending time in barrique, followed by further aging in bottle prior to release. This extended aging places the wine at the top tier of the Chianti Classico classification system.
The 2020 shows a deep ruby color and an earthy nose of top soil, bramble, and herbs, opening into bing and black cherry with a touch of licorice. The palate is powerful yet finely structured, carrying sweet, ripe blackberry fruit and polished tannins through a long, savory finish. Pair it with braised lamb shank, wild mushroom pasta, or a rich game stew.
