L'Erta di Radda was established in 2006 by winemaker Diego Finocchi, who replanted an old, mixed vineyard on a single high-altitude site in Radda in Chianti with Sangiovese. The estate released its first Chianti Classico in 2009, later adding a Riserva bottling from the same replanted plot. Working at roughly 430 meters of elevation, Finocchi has built a small, focused range centered on expressing the cut and minerality that this corner of Chianti Classico is known for.

Growing and Production

The Riserva is crafted from 100% Sangiovese grown on clayey, sandy soils rich in galestro and alberese, with notably high iron content. Fermentation includes an extended maceration lasting around 45 days, followed by 24 months of aging in 2,000 liter oak barrels, a longer, more deliberate process than the estate's base Chianti Classico, meant to build depth and structure while keeping the wine's mineral character intact.

Tasting Notes

The nose opens with chocolate and cinnamon, high toned and rich, giving way to red cherry, tobacco, and sandalwood, with a distinctly ferrous, bloodlike edge running beneath the fruit. The palate is compact and tenacious, built on a taut interplay of tannin and acidity. This is a wine for the table, pairing naturally with braised beef, roasted duck, or a sharp aged cheese.

92 Points
"The 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva is a dark, burly wine. Black cherry, menthol, licorice, dried herbs and graphite bring out the darker, more savory side of Sangiovese. The tannins could use a bit more polish, but its hard not to like this strapping, flavorful Riserva. "
