Poggio Antico occupies the highest vineyard hill south of Montalcino, an estate founded in 1976 and now spread across some ninety-one acres at an average elevation of nearly eighteen hundred feet. The property is certified organic and manages its vineyards through a plot-by-plot approach, dividing its land into fifteen distinct soil units to capture the character of each site, with Sangiovese as the dominant variety alongside smaller plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.

Lemartine sits outside the Sangiovese-only rules of Montalcino, blending roughly seventy percent Cabernet Sauvignon with thirty percent Sangiovese to bring together Bordeaux-style structure and the rigor of the local variety. Cabernet Sauvignon supplies the wine's backbone and depth, while Sangiovese lends freshness and brightness, and the two are aged together to build a wine with real intensity and length.

The 2020 is rich and generous, showing cherry, raspberry, wild rosemary, mineral, and spice notes with a smooth, succulent texture. Firm tannins grip the finish, settling into a long, well-balanced aftertaste that rewards a few more years in the cellar. Try it with grilled duck breast or a selection of hard aged cheeses.

94 Points
"Rich, boasting cherry, raspberry, wild rosemary, mineral and spice flavors, this red is also smooth and succulent. Firm tannins grip the finish, yet this finds a nice equilibrium as it winds down on the long aftertaste. Sangiovese. Best from 2026 through 2042. 439 cases made, 250 cases imported."
