Campo di Sasso is a project within the Tenuta di Biserno family of estates, founded near Bibbona in Tuscany's Alta Maremma. The estate released its first vintage in 2003, a notably hot year that helped establish the property's reputation and put its Syrah on the map early. The wine's name and its wild boar label reference the spot where the animal is known to root and roll, a nod to the rustic character of the surrounding Maremma countryside.

Growing and Production

The fruit for this wine comes from three plots totaling roughly 46 hectares, planted primarily on sandy soils with a touch of clay, quite different from the terrain found at the family's flagship Biserno property nearby. The blend leans on Syrah, rounded out with Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, giving the wine both structure and immediate approachability. It is crafted as a versatile, fruit forward style, meant to drink well with only modest cellaring.

Tasting Notes

The nose offers crushed lavender, purple plum, and mocha, layered with black pepper and a touch of turned earth. On the palate the wine is full and ripe, with dark black cherry fruit, well integrated tannins, and a clean, mineral tinged finish. It suits grilled meats, roasted pork, or a simple lamb stew with rosemary and thyme.
