Mastrojanni is a long-established estate in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, part of the historic core of Brunello di Montalcino, and among the region's producers most closely associated with expressing individual vineyard character. Vigna Loreto was first bottled as a standalone wine in 2007, produced in limited quantities to showcase a single, distinctive parcel separate from the estate's classic Brunello. It sits alongside Vigna Schiena d'Asino as one of the winery's two site-specific bottlings.

This wine comes from the Loreto vineyard, planted on lean, pebbly, tuff-rich soil with an easterly exposure that captures morning sun. Low yields from this particular terroir concentrate flavor in the Sangiovese grapes, and the 2021 growing season, following a mild but wet start to winter, produced a cooler and more structured expression than many recent vintages. As with all Brunello, the wine undergoes extended aging, including significant time in oak, before release.

Deep ruby in color, the wine offers dark cherry, wild berry, and dried rose petal aromas layered with spice, fresh tobacco, and a whisper of forest floor. On the palate it is intense yet elegant, with firm, silky tannins and lively acidity carrying through to a long, mineral finish. Pair it with braised short ribs, wild game, or aged pecorino.

97 Points
"Beautifully contoured and immediately expressive, the Mastrojanni 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Loreto brings together dark fruit, spice, minerality, Sangiovese sweetness and firm, well-shaped tannins. The wine is aromatic and accessible in its youth yet structured enough to reward additional aging, reflecting the site’s tendency toward openness and floral lift rather than sheer power. The vineyard measures 1.59 hectares at roughly 350 meters in elevation with southeastern exposures, planted on complex lacustrine soils composed of lignitic clays, sandstone, sand and conglomerates."
