2021 Mastrojanni - Toscana Rosso IGT San Pio Cabernet Sangiovese Super Tuscan (750ml)
Mastrojanni is a storied Montalcino producer founded in 1975 by Gabriele Mastrojanni, who recognized the exceptional potential of Sangiovese in the Castelnuovo dell'Abate area and built the estate around the historic Poderi Loreto and San Pio vineyards. The Illy family, known worldwide for their coffee business, later acquired the property and invested heavily in a new, state-of-the-art winery, reinforcing Mastrojanni's standing as one of Montalcino's most respected names while preserving its traditional approach to Sangiovese.
San Pio takes its name from one of the estate's original vineyard sites and is crafted as an approachable, everyday expression of the property, blending equal parts Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes ferment in temperature-controlled steel tanks before the wine ages for about 18 months in French oak tonneaux and small barrels, followed by a further six months resting in bottle, a process built to soften the wine's edges while retaining its structure.
The glass shows a deep ruby color with violet highlights, opening to aromas of black cherry, boysenberry, and dark plum layered with peppery spice, leather, and a touch of ferrous minerality. The palate is dry and full, with chalky tannins and a persistent finish. Its easy richness makes it a good match for grilled sausages, braised short ribs, or a simple burger topped with gruyere.
