Terreno sits just outside the village of Greve in Chianti, purchased by the Swedish Ruhne family in 1988 as something of a leap of faith when land in the region was still affordable. Sofia Ruhne, who grew up on the property, made her first wine there in 2010 and took over the estate fully in 2015, guiding it toward organic certification and a sharper focus on terroir driven Sangiovese. Winemaking today is led by Giacomo Fioravanti, who spent over a decade at the respected Isole e Olena estate before joining Terreno.

Growing and Production

This annata bottling, labeled Le Tre Vigne, is sourced from three high elevation vineyard sites in the Greve Valley, each fermented separately in open top containers to preserve the character of its individual parcel and clone. After fermentation the wine ages for 14 months in large 24 or 30 hectoliter casks, a scale of vessel chosen to let the fruit and site expression come through with minimal oak influence. The approach reflects Terreno's broader commitment to organic farming and hands on, small lot winemaking.

Tasting Notes

The 2021 vintage offers a fresh nose of cranberry and kirsch, with a suave, nicely concentrated palate carrying savory undertones beneath the bright red fruit. It finishes clean and balanced, with good structure for a wine at this level. It pairs well with roasted chicken, grilled sausages, or a simple plate of aged pecorino.
