2022 Le Boncie - Toscana Rosso IGT Chiesamonti (750ml)
Podere Le Boncie is the work of Giovanna Morganti, a trained oenologist who took over a small farm with olive groves from her father, a respected winemaker who championed native Tuscan varieties long before they came back into fashion. Located in San Felice, just north of Castelnuovo Berardenga in the southern reaches of Chianti Classico, Morganti farms biodynamically and works largely by hand, producing a small range of wines that stand apart from the region's more polished styles. She was among a group of growers, including Paolo Bea and Giuseppe Rinaldi, who pushed back against the conventions of the Italian DOC system in the early 2000s.
Chiesamonti comes from a 1.3-hectare parcel near the town of San Felice, planted mostly to Sangiovese with a small amount of Canaiolo on stony soil with less clay than her other sites. The 2022 growing season brought intense summer heat, concentrating the fruit and giving the wine unusual richness. Following fermentation the wine ages for roughly two years in Stockinger oak casks, a slow process that lets its structure soften while preserving freshness.
The wine shows dark red and purple fruit alongside blood orange, rose petal, and lavender, with a lifted, aromatic quality and a fine mineral edge. The palate is elegant and light on its feet despite firm tannins, finishing long and savory. It pairs beautifully with wild boar ragu, grilled quail, or aged Tuscan pecorino.
