2022 Castello di Ama - Chianti Classico DOCG (750ml)
Castello di Ama was founded in 1976 by four families in the hills of Gaiole, in the heart of Chianti Classico, about twelve miles northeast of Siena. The estate is now led by CEO Lorenza Sebasti, part of the second generation from one of those founding families, working alongside her husband, Marco Pallanti, who has served as winemaker and technical director since 1982 and once presided over the Chianti Classico Consorzio. Together they've spent decades replanting the estate's vineyards and modernizing its cellars, turning Ama into one of the region's benchmark producers.
This bottling is made almost entirely from Sangiovese, with a small portion of Merlot rounding out the blend, sourced from the historic Bellavista, Casuccia, San Lorenzo, and Montebuoni vineyards on clay and chalky soils roughly 500 feet above sea level. Each parcel ferments separately in stainless steel with only ambient wild yeasts, undergoes malolactic fermentation, and is then blended and aged in oak barriques before bottling.
The wine pours a bright ruby red, with aromas of red currant, cherry, violet, and strawberry. The palate is harmonic and fresh, with polished tannins and lively acidity. It suits wood-fired pizza, panzanella, or fresh burrata.
