Grown on the slopes near Castelnuovo dell’Abate, the 2023 Mastrojanni Rosso di Montalcino DOC captures the distinct terroir of southeastern Montalcino through wide diurnal temperature shifts caused by cold air draining from Monte Amiata. This microclimate sustains slow ripening across hand-harvested Sangiovese vines, yielding a bright ruby wine built for earlier enjoyment than the estate’s own Brunello bottlings.

Mastrojanni’s low-intervention cellar philosophy defines this release. Fermentation occurs exclusively in concrete vats over a minimum twenty-five-day maceration, followed by maturation in mixed-size Allier oak barrels. The winery transports all volumes by gravity instead of mechanical pumps, then bottles the wine without filtration to preserve crisp acidity and structural clarity. Active conversion to biodynamic farming since 2022 continues to improve vineyard resilience, resulting in clean concentration and evenly woven tannins.

Medium-bodied on the palate, this vintage displays core flavors of morello cherry and ripe plum layered with gentle spice and faint balsamic complexity. A lively structural backbone supports a lifted, juicy finish that encourages immediate drinking. It pairs seamlessly with grilled sausage, roast chicken, or a straightforward pasta dish prepared with tomatoes and fresh basil. Whether poured for casual weeknight meals or early-stage cellaring, this Rosso delivers focused Sangiovese expression rooted in Montalcino’s historic southern zone.

92 Points
"Bright, transparent and immediately appealing, the Mastrojanni 2023 Rosso di Montalcino delivers simple, well-defined fruit with wild cherry and cassis lifted by a hint of dusty minerality. The style is clean, accessible and easy-drinking, offering freshness and clarity rather than complexity, and it achieves very solid results for the category. Fruit is sourced from eight hectares spanning multiple elevations, exposures and soil types, with total production of 37,000 bottles."
