Duca di Saragnano is a label of the Barbanera family, a Tuscan wine company founded in 1938 by Altero Barbanera and his wife Maria in the village of Piazza. Now run by later generations of the same family, Barbanera has built its reputation on traditional Tuscan winemaking, treating quality as a guiding principle across its various regional labels rather than chasing a single flagship style.

This Toscana Rosso is made using governo all'uso toscano, an ancient technique dating back centuries in which a portion of partially dried grapes is added back into the wine after its first fermentation. This second, slower fermentation deepens the color and adds richness and softness to the finished wine, a method once common across Chianti before temperature-controlled tanks became standard. The blend draws on Sangiovese alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

The 2024 is deep and inviting, with notes of dark cherry, blackberry, plum, sweet spice, and a touch of dried fruit rounded out by hints of vanilla. On the palate it is round and velvety, an easy-drinking but full-flavored red that carries real depth for its price. Serve it with rosticciana or spaghetti in a rich meat sauce.
