2021 Hin Areni - Areni Vayots Dzor (750ml)
Hin Areni Winery was founded in 2013 in the village of Areni, in Armenia's Vayots Dzor region, an area widely regarded as the birthplace of winemaking after archaeologists uncovered a roughly 6,100-year-old winery nearby. The estate farms around 32 hectares of vineyards close to that ancient site and has grown into a leading voice for Armenian wine, working exclusively with the country's native Areni Noir and Voskehat grapes rather than international varieties.
This wine is made from Areni Noir, an ungrafted red grape planted at elevations between 1,215 and 1,250 meters on sedimentary and volcanic soils. The vineyards experience long, sun-filled summers with high daytime heat, offset by cool nights that stretch out the growing season and push harvest into late October, helping the grapes build flavor while keeping their natural acidity intact. After fermentation in stainless steel, the wine ages in oak barrels sourced from the forests of Artsakh, a nod to regional tradition that adds structure without masking the fruit.
The wine shows a deep ruby color with aromas of red and black fruit, cherry, and cassis, along with a touch of black pepper and earthy spice from its volcanic terroir. Medium-bodied with silky tannins and lively acidity, it has been compared stylistically to Pinot Noir. It pairs nicely with grilled lamb, roasted vegetables, or aged cheeses.
