2021 Novak - Rara Neagra Valul lui Trajan (750ml)
Novak is a family-run winery in Moldova, farming around 65 hectares of vines in the Valul lui Traian region in the country's south. The winery is led by winemaker Andrei Novak, who has built a reputation for combining traditional methods with modern technology and for championing local Moldovan grape varieties, including his revival of the once nearly forgotten Alb de Onițcani. That focus on indigenous varieties, paired with careful vineyard work, has helped Novak become one of Moldova's most internationally recognized producers, earning dozens of awards in recent years.
This wine is made entirely from Rara Neagră, also known as Băbească Neagră in neighboring Romania, an indigenous variety prized for its ability to reflect the character of its site. The grapes are grown in Valul lui Traian and the wine is part of Novak's flagship line, made with extended barrel maturation to build additional structure and depth. Rara Neagră is often compared to Pinot Noir for its light body, fine tannins, and lively natural acidity, qualities that come through clearly in this bottling.
In the glass this wine shows a ruby color with a fruity, slightly rustic character. Aromas of ripe plum and red berries mingle with oriental spice and a touch of earthiness, while the palate stays supple and crisp, framed by soft tannins and a warming finish. It pairs naturally with braised lamb, roasted red meats, and other hearty dishes.
