2022 Herdade de Gambia - Peninsula de Setubal Tinto (750ml)
Herdade de Gâmbia is a family-run estate located about nine kilometers from Setúbal, on a roughly 600-hectare property that sits within the Sado estuary's natural reserve, a sanctuary known for its migratory birds. Historically the land supported forestry, livestock, and cork production, with vines added only in 1986. Since 2009, through a partnership with Boas Quintas and winemaker Nuno Cancela de Abreu, the estate has vinified, bottled, and marketed its own wines rather than simply supplying grapes to others.
This red blends Touriga Nacional, Syrah, and Aragonez grown on the sandy soils typical of the Setúbal Peninsula, under a mild Mediterranean climate softened by proximity to the Atlantic. The grapes undergo a two-day cold pre-fermentation maceration to draw out color and aroma, followed by fermentation at a controlled temperature around 23 degrees Celsius in stainless steel. The approach favors freshness and immediacy over heavy extraction, producing a wine meant for early, easy drinking.
The wine shows a lively ruby color, with aromas of ripe blackberry, plum, and elderberry touched by a creamy, almost spiced quality. On the palate it is soft, fresh, and well balanced, with barely perceptible tannins and good structure. It pairs nicely with grilled meats, pasta, or spiced dishes.
