2024 Cousino Macul - Sauvignon Gris Maipo Valley Isadora (750ml)
Cousiño Macul was founded in 1856 and remains the only nineteenth century winery in Chile still owned by its founding family, now in its seventh generation. When Luis Cousiño died in 1873, his wife Isidora Goyenechea, then just thirty seven, took over the family's businesses and single handedly carried out her late husband's vision for the winery, becoming one of the leading figures in Chilean society at the time. This Sauvignon Gris carries her name and crest in honor of that legacy, and traces its genetic roots to vines Luis Cousiño originally brought from Martillac in the Graves region of France back in 1860.
The wine draws on ungrafted, own rooted vines grown across the Cousiño family's historic Macul property and their newer plantings in Buin, both located in the Alto Maipo subregion at the foot of the Andes. Growing on their own roots rather than grafted rootstock, sourced through the family's own massal selection nursery, helps preserve the genetic character passed down from those original French vines. The elevation and proximity to the mountains give the fruit a distinct freshness that carries through into the finished wine.
This Sauvignon Gris shows a clear, greenish yellow color in the glass, with aromas of pineapple, grapefruit, and apricot layered over notes of chamomile and soft florals. The palate carries high, vibrant acidity alongside real volume, with apricot and grapefruit flavors lingering into a persistent finish. It works well as a light aperitif and pairs nicely with shrimp scampi, crab cakes, or sushi.
