Hamilton Russell Vineyards built its reputation over more than 40 vintages in South Africa's Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, where proprietors Anthony and Olive Hamilton Russell became known for restrained, classically styled Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Eager to complement their cool-climate Southern Hemisphere program with a Northern Hemisphere counterpart, the couple spent years visiting and evaluating options before settling on Oregon's Willamette Valley, drawn by the region's rapid growth and its move toward a more refined, Burgundian style of winemaking. This bottling marked the maiden vintage of their new Oregon project.

The wine comes from the Maple Grove Vineyard near Monmouth, a site later folded into the developing Van Duzer Corridor AVA. Grown from Dijon Clone 95, the 2019 fruit was harvested just a day later than in 2018 despite an otherwise near-perfect growing season, with picking completed just ahead of a stretch of heavy rain that could have compromised quality. In the cellar the juice was fermented using Hamilton Russell's own indigenous yeasts, then aged in a mix of first-fill and third-fill French oak barrels to build texture without overwhelming the fruit.

The wine shows aromas of crushed stone and white flowers layered with lemon pith and lemon oil. On the palate it is smooth and polished, blending ripe apple and pear fruit with toasty, buttery richness and a firm mineral spine that keeps the wine from feeling heavy. Its texture pairs well with roasted turkey, buttered lobster, or a creamy risotto built around seasonal vegetables.
