2021 Cobb Wines Chardonnay — JoAnn's Block, Doc's Ranch, Sonoma Coast

Planted on a single acre of Clone 5 Chardonnay in the Doc's Ranch Vineyard, JoAnn's Block sits high on the Sonoma Coast at 1,000 feet, just three miles from the Pacific. The marine sedimentary soils and extreme cool-climate conditions of this westernmost site yield exceptionally electric, concentrated fruit that sings in a glass. This vintage was crafted to balance brightness with subtle richness, reflecting Cobb Wines’ heritage of expressive, place-driven white wines from the Sonoma Coast.

Tasting notes

The aroma is a delicate invitation—golden apple, bread dough, beeswax, and a marine whisper of sea spray. On the palate, the wine remains light-bodied yet intensely focused, displaying a tangy spine of acidity that carries the fruit through a long, precise finish with a touch of textural weight.

Winemaking & aging

The 2021 Chardonnay underwent full malolactic fermentation to soften its natural acidity and was aged 22 months in barrel, with only 10 percent new French oak contributing subtle spice and structure without overpowering the fruit.

Food pairings

  • Fresh oysters
  • Grilled halibut
  • Herb-roasted chicken

Winery context

From Cobb Wines, a family-led project that began in 1989 and grew alongside Ross Cobb’s winemaking journey with Coastlands and other Sonoma Coast sites. Today, the portfolio includes Chardonnay alongside Pinot Noir and Riesling, cultivated across estate vineyards and select grower partners to capture the region’s cool-climate character in each bottle.

96+ Points
"he 2021 Chardonnay Doc's Ranch Vineyard Joann's Block comes from vines planted in marine sedimentary soils at 1,000 feet in altitude. It underwent full malolactic conversion and was matured in 10% new French oak for 22 months. It has delicate, slowly unwinding scents of golden apples, bread dough, beeswax, saline and matchstick. The light-bodied palate is intensely focused, with a tangy spine of acidity driving expansive fruits that seem to gain in intensity as it glides through the mouth, and a touch of texture lengthens the finish. Reminiscent of Chablis, the Joann's Block offers surprising flavor for its modest 11.2% alcohol, and it will be long lived in bottle. 260 cases were made."
