2021 Hartford Court Chardonnay, Four Hearts Vineyard

From Hartford Family Winery, founded in 1993 by Don and Jennifer Hartford, this 2021 Chardonnay is drawn from the storied Four Hearts Vineyard on Laguna Ridge in the Russian River Valley. Hartford Court focuses on limited‑production, single‑vineyard bottlings, harvested from old‑vine sites that carry character and provenance. The Four Hearts site, with its cool, marine‑influenced climate, helps the fruit ripen slowly while preserving natural acidity for depth and balance.

The Four Hearts Vineyard sits on Laguna Ridge and holds some of the oldest Chardonnay plantings in the Russian River Valley, propagated from heirloom clones. In some vintages, a small portion of fruit from the nearby Middle Reach area is blended in to add floral lift. The wine is barrel fermented and aged in French oak, contributing texture and complexity without masking the wine’s bright fruit echoes.

Tasting notes

  • Aromas: toasted cedar, baked orchard fruit, and warm spice.
  • Palette: ripe yellow pear, tangerine, and almond, delivering a full‑bodied, nutty profile with a pithy, savory edge.
  • Appearance: rich golden hue that signals its generous, cellar‑worthy character.

Food pairing

  • Roast turkey
  • Pan‑seared scallops
  • A wedge of aged gouda
93 Points
"A rich golden hue with a slight haze, the 2021 Chardonnay Four Hearts Vineyards is a bit more inward aromatically at the moment but has a darker tone, with warming notes of toasted cedar, spice, and ripe, baked orchard fruits, Full-bodied, with a nutty texture and notes of ripe yellow pear, tangerine, and almond, it has a pithy texture and meatiness throughout. Drink 2024-2030."
