2023 Carol Shelton - Coquille Blanc San Luis Obispo (750ml)
Coquille Blanc 2023 — San Luis Obispo County (750 ml)
A red drinker’s white—and the most exotic Rhône‑style blend that California has to offer. From Winemaker of the Year laureate Carol Shelton, Coquille Blanc embodies the white wine she always wanted to make. The 2023 edition is a precise 50% Viognier, 30% Grenache Blanc, and 20% Roussanne, grown in the Paso Robles AVA of San Luis Obispo County.
Winemaking is a meticulous affair: 100% barrel fermentation with weekly stirring for six months, 50% malolactic fermentation, and aging for nine-plus months in a mix of older French oak and acacia barrels. The result is a wine that opens with an exotic, multi‑dimensional aroma and a palate that’s dry yet creamy, with almond paste layered over crisp, juicy pear fruit.
The name Coquille Blanc—pronounced ko-keel, French for scallop—echoes the Shelton family coat of arms and its shellfish-forward identity. It’s the perfect complement to its namesake shellfish, while also shining alongside chicken or pork prepared with buttery, creamy sauces.
