2013 Kopke - Colheita Tawny HALF BOTTLE (375ml)
Kopke is the oldest Port house in the world, founded in 1638 when Nicolau Kopke, a German merchant representing the Hanseatic League, settled in Portugal with his son and began shipping wine from the Douro. The company shifted from trading into vineyard ownership in 1781 and later acquired Quinta de São Luiz in 1922, a site still central to its production today. Now part of the Kopke Group under the Escotet family, the house has built a reputation over nearly four centuries for its Colheitas, single-harvest tawnies aged for extended periods in wood.
A Colheita is defined by coming entirely from one year's harvest rather than a blend of vintages, distinguishing it from other Tawny Ports. This 2013 was made from grapes grown on the Douro's steep schist terraces, fortified with grape spirit partway through fermentation to preserve sweetness, then transferred to small wooden casks for aging that continues for years before bottling. Colheitas are only bottled to order, so each release reflects a slightly different stage of maturity, with the wine drawing complexity and color change from its long, slow exposure to oxygen and oak.
The wine shows a reddish hue shading toward brown, with a nose of dried fruit, spice, and a faint smokiness. On the palate it is fresh and intense, with ripe cherry and plum notes carried by lively acidity into a long finish. Serve slightly chilled alongside caramel desserts or a not overly sweet fruit tart.
