2019 Foxglove - Pinot Noir Central Coast (750ml)
Foxglove is the value-focused second label from twin brothers Jim and Bob Varner, who first made their name in the 1980s farming Spring Ridge Vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains under the acclaimed Varner label. In 1991 the brothers launched Foxglove to offer everyday, approachable wines built with the same low-intervention philosophy as their premium bottlings, just without the cellar-worthy price tag. The line has earned a devoted following for its consistency and value, with New York Times critic Eric Asimov once retiring his "20 Under $20" column in part because he found himself recommending Foxglove too often.
The 2019 Pinot Noir draws fruit from several sites along California's Central Coast, an area shaped by mild winters, foggy summers, and proximity to the Pacific Ocean. The wine was raised mostly in stainless steel with only a small portion aged in puncheons, an approach that keeps oak influence to a minimum and lets the fruit's natural brightness take center stage. It finishes at a modest 13.6 percent alcohol.
Aromas of cherry, strawberry, and rhubarb carry a light herbal edge, while the palate stays medium-bodied and silky, closing with a touch of spice and hints of English breakfast tea. It pairs nicely with roast turkey, grilled salmon, or a simple pasta with tomato and basil.
